I dream of Aberystywth

Aberystwyth, a small coastal town in mid wales. Doesn’t seem like it has a lot of activity going on there, and yes, on the exterior it does appear to be like this. Just recently, I was watching a program where Aberystwyth was shown, and it reduced me to tears. Now, I imagine you all think that I’m a Grade A nut case but the reason as to why I felt so emotional is because I did my degree there, and had the best time. Some might even say the time of my life. I can’t really tell you why I chose Aberystwyth as my destination to spend four years of my life (it may have something to do with the fact they offered me low grades and my then boyfriend studied there)  but almost felt drawn to the place, even though I had never even seen or been there before. I’ll never forget the feeling of excitement when we rolled up in our full car, just the fact that I could see the sea was enough for me. My mum kept asking whether or not I would enjoy it there as it looked completely desolate and to a certain extent I understand where she was coming from. However, from the first night I ever spent there I knew that I was going to enjoy myself as my first night out was phenomenal. We went to a place called ‘The Glen’

which at the time was a great pub with a fantastic night life. It has now become more a low key place, but if your looking for a gorgeous pint

overlooking Cardigan bay during sunset, this is the place to be. Its beautiful. During my first year, I avidly avoided doing any study of any kind which meant I got to know very well the sights and sounds of sunny Aberystwyth such as the Varsity Bar for great cheap meals (on a student Budget), Rummers Pub  which is great fro meeting up with friends and enjoying a chat and listening to local bands (also great for shots) and of course how can I forget good old Cambrian, the best cocktail bar in the whole of MId Wales. Even though it doesn’t really do all the classics, it has a great mixture of cocktails that mean something to Aber students such as drinks named after societies and accommodation. I spent many a drunken hour there, often dressed as something bizarre, like a fairy or a nurse. Ha ha those were the days. Then again, I just loved and still do love Aber for its sheer uniqueness with the boutiques and individual sub climate of RAIN! ha ha! I guess the point that I’m trying to aim at is that even though it looks so small and boring, its full of life. I ask you to try to find a single student who went there and didn’t have a mind bowing time. I will never forget my time there, I had good and some very bad times, but it was an unforgettable experience and one that I would gladly repeat over and over again.

  3. I am thinking about going here for a Masters degree but can’t find any insightful information about what it’s actually like to live here. Thanks, this really helped! I’m not looking so much for a party scene since I will be getting my Masters but it sounds like the city is bustling, which is exactly what I want! Thanks again!

    • you’re welcome. This place means a lot to me and whatever kind of scene of ambience you are looking for, Abersywtyth is so distinct that you will definitely find it there! x

  4. SO glad i found it! hello, i’m from poland and i’m looking for any kind of information about Aberystwyth itself, studying there, simply everything which might help me to make my decision, because i’m seriously considering going there for studies. frankly speaking i fell in love with this town at first sight, but still i’m full of doubts and not sure about, well, everything. i’ve been wondering how’s living there? well, it’s quite small town, a bit isolated, but as i see- thinking about Aber as a boring town is a cliche, right?;] luckily i bumped into your blog, it was really good to know your sight. think it will be very helpful. already is!;]
and soooo sorry for the mistakes, huh.
